CCL Hawaii Presentations

CCL Hawaii members hosted or participated in many presentations on carbon cashback (carbon fee and dividend) and other climate topics focused on emissions reduction and collaborative climate action

Energy Efficiency and Clean Energy Pay off

The host for this show is Howard Wiig. The guests are Paul Bernstein and Ashley Boggs. The less energy you use the more your pocketbook grows. Get paid to be green, using Hawaii Energy rebates, tax credits, green loans and rebates from the huge federal grants available. Carbon cashback is a great money-returner. When you install efficient appliances and make your home photovoltaic-ready and electric vehicle ready you add value to your home. Be resource-efficient by registering your home as a rental and harvest resulting tax deductions.

Perruso is one of the lawmakers who will participate in the student-organized Climate Future Forum this Saturday at the Hawaiʻi State Capitol.

She’s no stranger to the political interests of young people — she taught high school social studies for decades before she became a representative.

“I've worked with young people my whole life. That has been my life,” said Perruso. “The moment of COVID was a break in what I saw working with young people in politics.

Audrey Lin, a sophomore at ʻIolani School and one of the organizers of Saturday’s Climate Future Forum knows that firsthand. Like many of her fellow students, she turned to activism to fight feelings of powerlessness during the pandemic.

“The pandemic… was a moment of realization for me,” said Lin. “When something so invisible, such as a disease like COVID-19, just forces you to change your entire lifestyle and change the way that you communicate with people, reaching out to outlets where we can make a difference is really important.”

Fellow ʻIolani sophomore and organizer Chisato Tarui is looking forward to digging into the nitty-gritty of climate policy with lawmakers during the forum. But she understands that might not be every student's idea of a laid-back Saturday…..

Think Tech Hawaii - The State of Clean Energy with host Mitch Ewen - Environmental Whack-a-Mole

Carbon Cash-Back for the Win. The host for this show is Mitch Ewan. The guest is Matthew Geyer. In the next legislative session a Carbon Cashback bill will be introduced. We discuss how this legislation would help. Carbon Cashback imposes a tax on all fossil fuels imported into Hawaii. The policy would increase the barrel tax rate for each fossil fuel at the desired carbon tax rateb thereby eliminating the need for additional bureaucracy. The government collects these additional barrel tax revenues and returns them to Hawaii residents. Every adult receives the same amount regardless of income, and every minor receives a half share. The University of Hawaii has conducted two carbon tax studies that analyzed policies essentially equivalent to the carbon cashback policy described above. These studies found: 1. A state-level carbon tax set at about $50/metric ton of CO2 would reduce Hawai‘i’s cumulative GHG emissions by 10% over twenty years. 2. Tax revenues given back to households in equal shares benefits lower-income households more than proportionately.

The show aired November 28, 2022
